What is PTSD?

PTSD can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Symptoms may include nightmares, intrusive memories, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, avoidance behaviors, difficulty sleeping, or feeling constantly on edge.

Trauma may result from military service, accidents, abuse, violence, medical events, childhood experiences, or other life-threatening situations.

Common Symptoms

  • Intrusive memories or flashbacks
  • Nightmares
  • Hypervigilance
  • Easily startled
  • Avoiding reminders of the trauma
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Irritability

  • Difficulty trusting others

How Treatment Can Help

These symptoms can affect daily functioning long after the traumatic event has passed. Treatment focuses on reducing symptom severity, improving emotional regulation, addressing sleep disturbances, and supporting long-term recovery.
